ON A PERSONAL NOTE A personal message from Chickadoo Suz: Since 2004, I've been trying to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing with my "new" life. So let me introduce you to my secret formula: kids + chickens + stories + libraries + sitting on the floor = Chickadoo Suz Kids are so very magical, in a very spiritual, cosmic way. I love children! I am a kid magnet. I inherited this gift from my family and most especially from my father, Robert King, Sr. He taught me, through his example, When how to become the age of whatever child I'm with and to make playing with the most important thing in the world. As a result, kids I've never seen before come up to me in stores and start talking to me or wave to me as they walk past with their parents. While harmless, it's surprising to everyone but the kids and me. We understand it. From the beginning of our Chicken Experience in 2001, I started sharing my chicken stories with friends and family. It was a really win-win, entertaining both of us. Then came the opportunities to share our farm with others and share my stories with them. I've always wanted to write a childrens' book. What I didn't realize was that I was already writing them, sort of. As a 2006 Christmas present for our granddaughter, Peyton, we gave her a My Chicken Diaries calendar. Along with each monthly chicken photo, we include a brief vignette, like a short story, about the monthly celebrity. Peyton called the calendar her "chicken storybook!" Amazingly, through the calendars, in my own way, I'd already created a storybook.
 My 9th birthday
I love libraries! I love seeing kids in libraries. When I was a child in Lincoln, NE in the 50's and 60's, the South Branch Library was one of my favorite get-away places. The six blocks between our home and the library were a just a quick bike ride. In fact. during the summer between second and third grades, I even won a summer poetry writing contest sponsored by the library. (I no longer have nor remember the poetry I wrote, but do still have the ribbon, somewhere.) I prefer to sit on the floor. Telling stories to kids is the perfect venue for sitting on the floor and it's easy to become just another kid sitting on the floor. So there you have it, the ingredients in my magic formula and the story of how I came to call myself Chickadoo Suz, The Roving Chicken Story-Teller.
