HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

from some of our favorite
My Chicken Diaries couples

Waddleston Q. Duck protects his sweetheart,
Neowana while she sits on a clutch of eggs.

Meet
Waddleston Q. Duck, a Mallard Drake, and Neowana, a Partidge Cochin hen.  They are the most unlikely life time sweethearts.  The fact they are different species seems quite irrelevant  They spend their days together, hunting, pecking, sunning and napping.

At sunset they walk outeer areas of the acreage apart from the rest of the flock, Waddleston quacking and Neowana clucking. He walks her to bed in the chicken house, then goes to his nesting spot in the grasses outside.  The next morning as soon as Neowana comes out of the chicken house, they start all over again.

Have you heard of anything sweeter?

How a little snuggle, Sweetheart?
Smitten Floyd and Not-So-Smitten Hope

Floyd, left, snuggling with Hope, the "Hen of His Dreams"

Hope is a seven pound, a-bit-past-prime, full-bodied Rhode Island Red hen.

Her suitor, Floyd, is a young, spry two pound Sebright Gold bantam rooster.

Floyd is hopelessly smitten over Hope.  However, Hope prefers life in the "rooster free" convent area.  By day, Floyd lingers in the courtyard outside the convent, longing for the moment that we open the convent door so he can slip inside unnoticed.

Once inside with the hen of his dreams, Floyd's quite content simply pass the time with Hope by day and to snuggle and roost next to her by night. As you can tell by the expressionon Hope's face, she's less impressed by the romance than is Floyd.

...

THE ROMANCE OF CESAR AND ISOLDE

Cesar, a Cubalaya Rooster, loves to show his beautiful tail feathers.  At maturity, Cubalaya rooster tails can grow as long as 4 ft!

Isolde, his sweetheart with her chicks. The middle two are Cesar's sons, Daedo and Vega.

Cesar, a Black Breasted Red Cubalaya rooster, and Isolde, a Partridge Silkie hen, have a very romantic evening tradition.  As the sun sets, Cesar flies to the opposite side of the chicken yard fence. Isolde stays inside the yard.  Then they stroll along the fence line, back and forth until it's time to go in the chicken house to roost for the night.

Sadly, Cesar died during Hurricane Rita. Isolde missed him badly.  Every evening for a month afterwards, she walked her side of the fence waiting for him to arrive.  She was so lost without him.   When she went broody at the end of the month of mourning, two of the chicks she hatched were his chicks.  (FYI for the scientifically minded reader: Male sperm stays active in a hen for at least 30 days, making the ending to this romance possible.)

KIVA, THE PROTECTOR,
AND HIS FAVORITE HEN,
DELILAH

Kiva, an Ameracauna rooster, protects his favorite Valentine, Delilah, a Delaware hen, against a potential interloper.  While chickens are not monogomous, they do often chose a preferred sweetheart or two or three.  Roosters with higher pecking order in the flock attract a steady following or harem of hens.  They spend their days together and roost near one another at night.

During this month of romance, may you enjoy the company of your favorite Valentine!

Always a Valentine!

With her egg-clusive designer heart-shaped spangles, Lisa Marie Presley, an Appenzeller Spitzhauben hen, is a Valentine's Day favorite all through the year.

Sorry, boys, she's taken.  She's the heart throb of Pepper, the Rooster King of all chicken yard lands.

So distinctive are Lisa Marie's heart-shaped spangles, that we can trace her decendents by their inherited heart-shaped spangles, too.  For example, look at her daughter
Perdone, Miss March 2010.  She sports Lisa Marie's sweetheart signature spangles, too.

Whether you wear your heart on the inside or outside, be sure to let it glow a warm red on Valentine's Day!

QUACKINGLY ROMANTIC
VESTIA AND LUCKY

Meet Vestia, a Blue Crested Swedish and her sweetheart, Lucky, a crested Rouen drake.  Having not just one crest but four small crest combined into one, his name became obvious - Lucky, like a four-leaf clover.

Romance for ducks is a seasonal thing - they are monogamous and quite loyal for a mating season.  Next season they choose the same partner or try someone new.  As for Vestia and Lucky,  they were ducklings together and this is their first season.  We'll have to wait until next year to see if the romance continues.

Love is a gift that leaves both
its giver and receiver richer
every time it's shared.

Share your love today!
