Our precious, gentle, Angel, a White Japanese bantam hen, is nearly 8 years old and our oldest hen. In her prime she used to fly 50 - 70 feet across the chicken yard to land on our arm or head. She loves to sit in our laps and being softly caressed and cuddled.
Once she started a nest in the garage on top of the paint cans. But, now she has gone through "egg-o-pause" and no longer lays eggs.
Retired Angel, now lives in "The Convent," a special rooster-free extension to the chicken house built just for her. From time to time, other hens come stay a few days of R&R before returning to the active chicken yard life.
Occasionally, Angel serves as a "Chicken Ambassador" going with Chickadoo Suz
to libraries and girl scout troop story-telling session, educating and entertaining young and old alike.

Christmas eve 2004, on our farm south of Houston, TX, we had an unusual 3 inches of snow. It was lovely for the short time it lasted. The chickens had never seen snow before. Roger II (above), son of Harry a Red Cochin bantam rooster and Aurora, an Australorp hen, rose to the occasional, flying on top the feeding station and crowed loudly and proudly that all was safe and well.
